These days, many newbies in photography community have a question for Canon 80D. Actually, they do not know why a broad range of photographers falling in love with this? This article will somehow give you the answer.
Launched in 2016, the Canon 80D is an ungraded version of the 70D with a focus on video recording capacity. For a long time, Canon’s launching style still has stayed the same. They introduce a new product every three years along with upgrading a bit of functionality. Like the 60D and 70D versions of DSLR line, the 80D shows a lot of targets of Canon in shooting movies with noticeable improvements in quality and supporting accessories.
Normally, the appearance of the DSLR cameras of the Canon brand has not had much change through many launches. And the 80D is not out of the trend. In comparison with the 70D generation, such new version has no significant differences in style. It owns a magnesium cover combined with Poly Carbon and leather. All of them weight about 730g. So, the 80D is relatively light. It is exactly convenient for users to take the camera everywhere.
There is a new point in the 80D which lies in the appearance of a headphone jack on the left side. Such additional feature is especially for those who often make videos with DSLR. Thanks to the headphone jack, the 80D enables you to check gradually sound when recording clips or listen to the sound of favorite ones again over again. It means that there is no need to transfer the clips to other devices at all.
NFC and USD points
Moreover, NFC connecting point is also available on such DSLR camera from the Canon next to Wifi connection. It has a task of making the line between the camera and other devices such as smartphones and tablets. The improvement removes all complex setting and makes steps quicker instead. However, a mini USD port on the 80D is only 2.0, not as the expectation.
Battery and storage
The 80D’s battery is slightly better than the previous version with new 1865mAh LP-E6N. It is available for about 960 photos, higher than the old LP-E6 (1800mA). The camera can even use the standard battery of the LP-E6, but the number of shots can be reduced to 920, according to the manufacturer. The storage capacity of the 80D has only one SD card slot (SDXC/SDHC support).
The touch screen which rotates 1.04 million pixels in term of the 70D stay the same on 80D. This maintenance facilitates a convenient operation with parameters from the aperture, speed, ISO to focus points, touch to capture. Meanwhile, the 80D’s Viewfinder gives a 100% view of the frame wider than the70D (98%).
From the 60D, Canon has focused more on the ability to film on their DSLRs. This continues to be promoted on the 70D and finalized on the 80D. The maximum resolution of video on the 80D is still only Full HD 1080p. However, the figure of the photo frame is doubled to 60fps in comparison with just 30fps of the 70D. So it makes the frame smoother, and users can create videos like on the best slow motion camera in a basic form as well.
Furthermore, the 80D allows saving files in either MP4 or MOV format. The file MP4 is about 60 Mb/s, and MOV is approximately 90 Mb/s. The camera also has a flicker detecting mode when shooting movies under the fluorescent light or computer/handset screen with the low scanning frequency.
The 80D supports Dual Pixel CMOS AF on the sensor, which can focus continuously in the Live View or Servo AF II mode for faster and more accurate detection. The practical experience shows that focusing on the Live View on the 80D has overcome the shutter flash and a strong contrast effect on the 70D or the 60D before.
The 80D’s imaging capabilities were upgraded with a 24.2MP sensor, DIGIC 6 processor (above 70d with 20.2MP and Digic 5+). The focus point increases to 45 cross-type points compared to only 19 points above the 70D to help focus, layout more comfortable. Users are able to select multiple focus modes, such as pointing, zoning or automatic choosing.
Such version of Canon focuses fast even when the light conditions are very low (-3EV). The new flip-flop mechanism appears on the 80D as well, which minimizes vibration during operation and thus sharper images, even when shooting at low shutter speeds. This mirrored mechanism is also on the 7D Mark II and 5Ds.
Range of ISO
The ISO range on the 80D is a bit wider and defaults at 100 to 16000 (over the 70D is 100 to 12800), and up to 25600 in manual mode. The maximum shooting speed of the camera is raised to 7 fps in comparison with the previous generation 6.7fps. The number of shots taken in burst mode goes up to 110 JPEGs and 25 RAW images (70d was only 65 JPEGs and 16 RAWs ).
There is a kit lens which is designed with the 80D. It is an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, with Nano USM Technology. So, is it the best lenses for Canon 80D? Yes, it may be because of offering faster-focusing speed than when shooting and taking pictures. This lens will maximize its power when it comes with the PZ-E1, which supports a smoother zoom at two different zooming speeds. In fact, this accessory can be controlled via the Camera Connect application on the phone. And PZ-E1 is sold separately.
All of the information above is a real experience of the Canon 80D. They are may be true for many users while some differences are for others. In general, such DSLR version of the Canon surely can satisfy your full photography desire. Although there are still some drawbacks, the Canon 80D still is an ideal investment for both taking photos and making videos.
