[Quick Tips] Steam Exit Big Picture

For those who are wondering what the “Big Picture” thing on Steam is, it’s really cool and offers a brand new experience for those running their PC on an HDTV. But whenever you start certain full-screen games, Steam automatically enters big picture mode. This sometimes may annoy you! If you are seeking for Steam Exit Big Picture, here’s the right place to come.

It would be great if there is a real way to not show or disable the option to “Exit big picture mode” because this doesn’t make much sense when you open steam with -big picture flag, without a desktop environment on the background.

What is Big Picture mode?

Big Picture is a newly-launched mode of Steam designed to navigate Steam with a game controller. With Big Picture,  you can enjoy a brand new experience of Steam games in a new full-screen user interface which has been completely redesigned for readability and interaction on TV. It can also be used on your usual computer display.

Controller Support levels

You can play any Steam games in Big Picture mode, though not all Steam games support the use of a controller. Currently, Big Picture supports the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows, the Xbox 360 Wired Controller, and the Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710.

How to launch Big Picture mode

Once your computer is running on the desired display, launch Steam. Click the “Big Picture” button featured in the top right corner in the Steam client, or press the home button on your controller while using the Steam client.

To exit this mode, click or press your controller’s “A” button while focused on the “Big Picture Mode” button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen( Steam UI)?. Another quick way to go into and out of Big Picture’s fullscreen mode is to press ALT + ENTER on your keyboard.

Exiting Steam Big Picture mode

Big Picture mode is great and all, but when you choose ‘exit’ to closes the Big Picture mode screen and goes back to normal desktop Steam but you can’t exit Steam itself from the Big Picture mode. This is a little bit challenging!
Have you ever decided to give Big Picture mode a try but you can’t figure out the way to exit a game once you’ve started it? I can launch games just fine and when I’m not in a game, I can exit Big Picture just fine, but how do I quit a Big Picture game without going to my keyboard?

Most modern games have an option built in that’s on the main menu or pause menu, usually labeled “Exit to Desktop”. You pause the game > exit to the main menu > exit to desktop, whereupon you’ll be taken back to Big Picture.

Some games will let you “exit to desktop” right from the pause menu. Far Cry 3 does. As far as I’m aware, I’m fairly sure Big Picture doesn’t have an overall “Exit Game” function built in, and that’s probably because the method in which a game is exited is different from game to game.

Turn off/on big picture exit not working?

Q: I checked if this option is activated – it is – still if I exit big picture, my controller doesn’t shut down. which is kind of annoying. especially because it USED TO do that. like it should. does anyone else has this problem? or better: a solution?
A: Have you tried a recent beta? I recall there was a fix listed recently for that. You can also just turn the controller off manually by either holding the Steam button or using the Steam+Y default chord binding.

Click the power button on the top right of steam interface => select exit big picture. (You can just click on the On/Off symbol in the top right corner and select “Exit Big Picture.”)

Is there any way to exit big picture (not steam) and turn the controller off with a single button?

Every time you close Big Picture or steam in general, I have to manually turn off your controller right after. You may be wondering whether there is any option to exit big picture (not steam) and turn off the controller off with a single button. The answer is YES.

In the controller settings, you can turn off the controller when BPM is exited. Then you can simply press Alt+F4 to close BPM and the controller will turn off as well. Steam’s desktop version will continue to run with this method as well, it is only BPM that is closed with the Alt+F4.

Turn off Steam Controller without using big picture mode

You have a steam controller connected to a computer but you don’t know to turn the controller off without launching big picture mode? It’s a piece of cake!

Now you can use the method of holding down the controller button for 4 seconds to turn it off

Changed controller Steam/Xbox button behavior to fix a collision with the hold-down-for-4-seconds method of turning off the controller:

  • Old behavior: Hold down 3 seconds to launch Big Picture (or single press if you were in desktop Steam).
  • New behavior: Pressing once will change focus to Steam if it doesn’t have focus. If it has focus, pressing once will launch Big Picture.
