This is for all of you REAL Road Warriors out there. We’re the ones who practically live out of our cars, have permanent coffee or soda stains in our cup holders, Post-It notes all over our dashboards, and our floor mats never get vacuumed (who’s got time for THAT?). Oh yeah, and of course you can usually find a French fry or two and maybe a piece of tomato or lettuce under our seats.
This is NOT for those people who spend most of their time flying from city-to-city (maybe more aptly named “Air Warriors”?). They’re a whole ‘nother animal. And if you do both, well, then I just feel sorry for you.
Operating a business out of our car, truck, or van isn’t easy. And it’s a big reason why our vehicles are always a mess. We’re taking call notes, scheduling appointments, writing orders, and jotting down leads of companies we whiz by. We’re also eating, drinking, spilling, and who knows what else. Let’s immagine that you bring some best spyderco knife and still work well in your car.
Wouldn’t you love to get to the point where you can say, “You know, I actually love working from my car”? If you’re reading this now, I’m guessing you’re not quite there yet. But it’s my goal to get you there.
There are lots of “Top 10 Best Ways…” to work out of your vehicle. Most of them focus on products. And of course, accessories and gadgets can be a huge help and you’ll find a lot of great product ideas here. Let’s try to have some Best Law Enforcement Flashlight and then you will understand.
However, re-thinking how you work, can be just as, if not more, impactful. Here, I’ll not only show you some great products but also suggest many other resources that can make life in your car a little easier. Therefore, as I noted in the book description, this book a hybrid: V2 guide and V2 catalog.
And a few quick notes…
- I mostly use the term “car” to refer to all vehicles.
- I occasionally use “RW” for “Road Warrior(s).”
- The word “hack” is played, so I made up my own word as a substitute: “UMOption.”
Because there are many links to recommended products and other resources peppered throughout this book, you might want to have WiFi enabled while you’re reading or if you come back to it for reference.
I didn’t set out to write this book to promote products, but later figured if I’m going to mention something useful here, maybe that could also defray some of the costs of producing the book and website. Therefore, I just want to be upfront that I’m an affiliate partner with some of the suppliers of products that I recommend. This means I could get a commission from any purchases you make through these links. You won’t pay any more for those items, though.

Whatever it is, I’ve tried to cover it here.
During the years of working out of my car, I’ve juggled papers, brochures, catalogs, product samples, bag phones (with mounted antennae), flip phones, PDAs, a Crackberry, GPS, map books, AAA Trip Tiks, bagged lunches, fast food, and yes, sushi. I’ve had customers, vendor reps, co-workers, sales managers, and big wigs riding alongside of me – not to mention my kids and their friends, their sports equipment, camping gear – you name it.
I’ve been doing this for so long that my first car phone was hardwired and mounted to my
console, and it had a rear windshield-mounted antenna. That’s when cell phones were status symbols – so much so that you could even buy fake plastic spiraled antennae for your car to make it look like you had a cell phone. How pathetic is that?
I’ve also worked out of company cars and my personally-owned vehicles. I’ve operated out of a 2-door coupe, many different sedans, SUVs, vans, and a pick-up truck, I think the only vehicles I haven’t worked from are a motorcycle and a boat (though some of the tips here can be used for those, too!). All types of vehicles have been considered here.
I’ve tried a ton of things to improve my mobile workflow and work/life balance. Some of my methods and accessories have worked well, while others have flopped. At this point in my life and career, though,
I usually know instantly what will work…for me, anyway. Hopefully you’ll find some things here that will work for YOU.
It’s more than just pimping your ride.
You can trick out your wheels with all kinds of stuff to improve your organization. And organization is a big part of “car shut ” But there’s so much more to it than that. It’s about assessing ALL of the factors in your work-drive experience. As maybe you’ve done with your home (or would like to do), we’re about to completely transform your car from a source of stress and chaos into a place of peace and productivity. And with this, you’ll gain more of life’s most precious commodity: TIME.
Think about it. If you get more work done in your car while you’re in your car, that’s less time that you’ll need in the office doing followups. You can then cultivate that time into your bigger enjoyments of life: family, friends, hobbies, a side hustle…whatever your heart desires!
